Esophageal cancer usually begins in cells that line the inside of the esophagus. People who esophageal cancer can occur anywhere along the esophagus.

The cause of esophageal cancer is unclear. Throat cancer occurs when cells in the esophagus mutate and grow uncontrollably. Abnormal cells that accumulate to form tumors in the esophagus that can grow to invade nearby structures and spread to other parts of the body.

Signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer are:
* Difficulty swallowing
* Weight loss
* Chest pain
* Fatigue
